Job Title:  School Age Counselor                                                                            

Status: Part-Time Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y in strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a structured before & after-school program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Actively supervises a group of children, according to plans, while maintaining appropriate staff-to-child ratios, as required by the Virginia Department of Education. This includes participating in planned activities with the children.
  2. Perform all duties in a manner that reflects the YMCA's character values.
  3. Cultivate positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children, and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  4. Fill out accident/incident reports as needed.
  5. Maintain consistent and accurate communication with staff and supervisor concerning program issues, supplies, schedule changes, illnesses, and other necessary information.
  6. Facilitate emergency procedures.
  7. Assist in planning and implementing the daily program, including the following: treating each child with dignity and respect; recognizing and considering the individual needs of the child in relation to cultural and socio-economic background, disabilities, special talents and interests, style, and pace of learning; helping children learn to think creatively, solve problems independently, and respect themselves and others.
  8. Helping with the preparation of snacks, according to USDA & VDOE requirements.
  9. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children and their families.
  10. Promote positive rapport among staff members.
  11. Follow all personnel policies and procedures.
  12. Maintain a neat appearance.
  13. Promptly report problems to your supervisor.
  14. Come to work with a great attitude!
  15. Assist in the daily setup and cleanup of activities.
  16. Be willing to put forth the effort to make the program a success.
  17. Attend staff meetings and training.
  18. Follow all standards for licensing as put forth by the Virginia Department of Education.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Employees must be prepared to work outside in extreme weather conditions, such as but not limited to, excessive heat, rain, and cold.
  • Must be willing to get into a swimming pool.
  • Must be able to lift up to forty pounds.
  • Bending, kneeling, stooping, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Active participation in all activities is required.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Personal Trainer

Category: Wellness

Job Type: Part-Time

The Personal Trainer follows the YMCA of the USA Health and Fitness guidelines and is responsible for planning and leading a range of individualized or group exercise/activity sessions for clients in a fitness specialty area. The incumbent performs a variety of fitness programs that are both educational and motivational. The incumbent provides customer service that promotes member wellness in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures and creates a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, implement, and instruct a variety of personal training and group training sessions for clients.  Provide encouragement and expertise for the client in support of their health and well-being goals.
  • Administer, track, and evaluate health history questionnaires, fitness assessments, and other pre-participation documentation with regard to individual exercise programs.
  • Adhere to all guidelines and expectations as outlined in the YMCA Healthy Living Staff Manual which includes but is not limited to providing safe classes and sessions and responding to and reporting any accidents or incidents.
  • Promote and sell personal training programs and services while achieving monthly revenue and session goals.
  • Maintain required CECs and national certifications.
  • Follow Fitness Floor expectations when not scheduled for personal training, group training, or performing wellness consultations.
  • Educate clients on provided exercises.
  • Builds effective relationships with members, and non-members to promote Personal Training sales. ·
  • Keeps accurate personal training logs with client signature of sessions used to date.
 

Preschool Teacher Assistant (Mon-Fri 12pm - 6pm)

Supervise and maintain all aspects of the Wellness Center and related areas.  Wellness Coaches assist in membership development and retention through quality leadership and continuous follow up. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Interprets, communicates, and promotes Y mission, goals, and objectives to members and the community.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  3. Builds and maintains positive relationships with staff.
  4. Promotes all Y programs as assigned by the Wellness Director.
  5. Ensures Wellness Center policies and etiquette are followed.
  6. Ensures Wellness Center and related areas are clean, safe, and organized.
  7. Ensures Wellness Center and related facilities have towels/rags.
  8. Conducts GPS and FitPath® assessments for members to meet their individual needs.
  9. Provides continuous supervision, education, and encouragement to all members.
  10. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  11. Encourages Y members to meet their own determined wellness goals through regular contact, incentive programs, and relationship development, including, but not limited to, maintaining contact with members with regular emails and/or phone calls to ensure their goals are being met.

Will respond to children with respect and consideration and treat all children equally regardless of ability, age, gender, gender identity, race, religion, or culture.

Will conduct a health check on each child, each day, as they enter the program, noting any fever, bumps, bruises, burns, unusual marks, etc. Questions or concerns will be addressed to the parent or child in an open ended, non-threatening way.

Shall not leave a child unsupervised in a YMCA program.

Youth must always be within sight and sound of a qualified staff member.

Ratios are to be maintained or exceeded, at all times. Volunteers may not count in the staff:child ratio.

Will utilize the “rule of three” and headcounts during all transitions. The “rule of three” specifies that there should always be at least three people present – i.e., one employee and two children or two employees and one child.

May not be alone with a single child where they cannot be observed by others. As staff/volunteers supervise children, they

should space themselves in a way that other staff can see them. Volunteers may never be alone with children without a qualified staff member present.

 

 

Restroom/Locker Room Supervision:

Staff will make sure the restroom is not occupied by suspicious or unknown individuals before allowing children to use the facilities.

Only one child, per stall, may enter a restroom at any time.

An individual school-age child may be permitted to go to a non-public restroom unattended if the restroom is within vision of a supervising staff member. Two or more school-age children going to the same restroom at the same time must be accompanied to the restroom by a qualified staff and be within staff hearing, at all times. Staff may stand in the doorway but not enter the restroom. This allows privacy for the children and protection for the staff (not being alone with a child).

An individual staff may not enter the non-public restroom with a school-age child, at any time.

If a school-age child needs assistance in the restroom, two staff are required to assist.

 

When utilizing a public restroom or restroom at the center that the general public is permitted to use:

  • Children must be accompanied to the restroom by a qualified staff
  • The staff member may enter the restroom but may not enter a child’s individual
  • Staff will utilize the “rule of three.” The “rule of three” specifies that there should always be at least three people present – i.e., one employee and two children or two employees and one child.

For children younger than school-age:

  • Children must always be accompanied to the restroom by a qualified staff
  • The restroom must be within vision and hearing, at all
  • A qualified staff member may enter the restroom to assist a younger child with toileting when needed, however, the doors to the restroom must remain open and staff should attempt to position themselves so that they are visible to others.

Shall use positive techniques of guidance including redirection, positive reinforcement, and encouragement, rather than competition, comparison, and criticism. Staff and volunteers will have age-appropriate expectations and set up guidelines and environments that minimize the need for discipline.

Physical restraint (supportively holding a child in the least restrictive way) is used only in pre-determined situations

(necessary when a child’s behavior places the child or others around the child at risk of physical harm). The staff person must be an experienced staff member and one that is known to the child and shall only restrain the child for as long as is necessary for the child to regain control. All incidents must be immediately reported to the supervisor, parent notified, and documented.

Will not release children to anyone other than the authorized parent, guardian, or other adult authorized by the parent or guardian. Drop-off and pick-up procedures must always be followed, and IDs must be verified.

May not be alone with children they meet in YMCA programs outside of the YMCA programs outside of the YMCA. This includes babysitting, sleepovers, and inviting children to one’s home unless one of the following conditions exist:

  1. Staff and volunteers have a relationship with the child, family, or guardians, that predates the child’s enrollment in a
  2. YMCA

Staff and volunteers and the child or the child’s family or guardian are related.

When these conditions exist, the employee must notify the supervisor and file the appropriate disclosure. May not transport participants in YMCA programs in personal vehicles.

Will not give gifts (even small gifts), ask children to keep secrets, or show favoritism to certain children.

May not date or become romantically involved with employees, members, or program participants under the age of 18. Will refrain from intimate displays of affection in the presence of children, parents, staff, and volunteers.

Will not use, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs during working hours or while on YMCA premise. Will not smoke or use tobacco in the presence of children or parents during working hours.

Shall not share their personal contact information with any youth participating in YMCA programs.

Understands that any contact with youth members or program participants via private electronic communication, including, but not limited to, phone calls, text messages, email, social media accounts, friend requests, etc. is prohibited. If you receive correspondence via electronic communications from any youth whom you know from YMCA programming, you should immediately contact your supervisor. Any response to them is a violation of your no-contact promise to the YMCA.

Will not have sexually oriented materials including printed or online pornography, on our organization’s property. 27) Must obtain parental permission to take photos/videos of YMCA participants under the age of 18. The use of personal cell phones to photograph/video YMCA participants is prohibited. Staff and volunteers cannot use photographs/videos taken at YMCA programs and/or of YMCA participants for any personal use.

May not use personal cell phones while supervising children.

Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the Operations Director, the Wellness Director is responsible for guiding members in the pursuit of improved well-being, by delivering health and wellness options that will support them on their wellness journey.  The Director will build a team to best deliver those options, to include: personal training, innovative programming, group fitness for all levels and ages, on-boarding and retention of members, outreach in the local community and healthy living engagements.  The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Wellness Center, including the training and supervision of Wellness Coaches.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating and conducting member orientations as part of the YMCA’s GPS program, addressing member complaints, resolving problems, maintaining cleanliness of the Wellness Center and assisting in preventative maintenance of equipment.  Additionally, the Wellness Director will assist with day-to-day operations of the YMCA as needed, attend and assist with fundraisers and special events, and assist with the Annual Support Campaign.  The Wellness Director must be willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of members, to include some nights and weekends. 

 

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Understand the “health seeker” mentality, and guide members in their pursuit of improved well-being by engaging, supporting, guiding, involving and providing a broad range of innovative programs, activities and events that meet their interests and needs. Included in this is successful implementation of the YMCA’s GPS program, and utilization of FitPath.  Other examples may include group fitness, individual and small group coaching/personal training, and chronic disease prevention.

 

  1. Create an environment where members are welcomed and engaged while using the Wellness Center.

 

  1. Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise & evaluate all Wellness Staff, to include Wellness Coaches, Group Fitness Instructors, and Climbing Wall Belayers.

 

  1. Implement and evaluate, wellness, group exercise, and personal training programs that promote membership enrollment and retention. Direct wellness staff to support health and wellness initiatives to achieve retention goals. 

 

  1. Collaboratively work with members through the YMCA’s GPS program to provide ongoing coaching, goal setting, and exercise prescription.    

 

  1. Actively pursue training, learning opportunities and certifications as they relate to job responsibilities, for self and staff. Monitor applicable certifications (CPR/First Aid/AED, Belay, Group Exercise specific, etc.) for all Wellness Staff.

 

  1. Proactively take the lead in the Wellness Center as far as all areas are concerned (staff development, equipment needs, Health & Wellness programs, appearance of rooms, response to members, broken equipment, and cleanliness).
