POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at Anytown YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
  3. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Attends all scheduled meetings and monthly in-service trainings set forth by the Aquatics Director and/or other YMCA leadership staff.
  6. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  7. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA.
  8. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  10. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  11. Responsible for recording and reporting all accidents and incidents to Aquatics Director, in a timely manner.
  12. Responsible for understanding the use, maintenance, and upkeep of equipment used at the aquatics center.
  13. Reports any concerns and issues to the Aquatics Director.
  14. Responsible for keeping the pool area safe, clean, and orderly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate objects, including rescue equipment, tools, and controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, hear, and see.
  • Due to the nature of this job, the Lifeguard may encounter emergencies where physical demands are increased and may include, leaping or jumping from a significant height, running, swimming, and the ability to visually recognize actions of participants in and around the pool including possible victims in a variety of accidents, incidents, and medical emergencies.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. May have to remove people of different heights and weights from the pool.
  • The work environment will include humidity, water moderate to warm water, and air temperatures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Certifications: Basic life support for professional rescuer, CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration (provided after hire)
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent (provided after hire)
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date (provided after hire)
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills by YMCA standards
