Who We Are

NATIONAL Y HISTORY
OUR LOCAL HISTORY
SERVING EMPORIA-GREENSVILLE SINCE 2001
The Y has been a pioneering force in the United States for nearly 160 years. Numerous sports, such as basketball, volleyball and racquetball were invented at the Y, therefore shaping the way people defined healthy and fun activity. Other healthy, enjoyable activities that started at the Y include camping, physical fitness, and swim lessons.
Locally, a group of concerned and dedicated citizens came together in 2000 to try to bring a YMCA to the community. With financial support from the Greensville Memorial Foundation, the organizers launched a Founder’s Campaign then opened a storefront facility on June 27, 2001. Initially offering a fitness center, a group exercise studio, Child Watch, and summer camp programming, the YMCA quickly outgrew its space, underwent two expansions, and began offering After-School Care.
Having outgrown its space again, the YMCA embarked on a partnership with the Greensville Memorial Foundation to build a new, 27,500+ square foot facility. Centrally located in the heart of the medical community, the new building allowed the YMCA to expand its programming adding preschool, a teen program, an outdoor climbing wall, an indoor walking track, and gymnasium. With over 2,100 individual members, the YMCA averages over 71,000 visits per year.
Looking to the future, the Y is excited to continue serving individuals and families in our community through programs that nurture the potential of every child, improve our health and wellbeing and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors in need.
