SWIM TESTING

 

·         Children (ages 5-12) must have their skills evaluated by a lifeguard by completing a swim test. 

·         If the swimmer cannot complete, or chooses not to complete, the swim test, he/she must wear a red band and swim in the designated shallow area with an adult/guardian who is in the water within arm’s reach at all times.

 

  • Please shower before entering the pool.
  • Appropriate swim attire is required.
  • Watch all children closely. Non-swimmers, and those under 5, must be in the water within arm’s length of an adult/guardian.  Red band swimmers in water greater than armpit depth must wear a flotation device.
  • Only US Coast Guard approved flotation devices are allowed. An adult/guardian must be in the water within arm’s reach of any participant wearing a flotation device.
  • No diving.
  • Feet first entries only. Spins or flips into the pool are not allowed.
  • No long underwater breath holding or hyperventilation activities.
  • No running or horseplay. Examples of horseplay include:
    • Pushing
    • Carrying people on shoulders
    • Dunking
    • Swallowing or spitting water
  • Masks and snorkels may only be used by adult lap swimmers.
  • No glass containers, food, drinks (other than water), or gum are allowed in the pool.
  • The pool will close during thunder and lightning storms. Pool will remain closed for at least 30 minutes.
  • Kickboards, fins, and pull buoys are for instructional and lap swimming only.
  • Only YMCA approved water toys are permitted in the pool with the lifeguard’s approval.
  • Do not enter the pool if you suspect you have a communicable disease or an open cut or blister.
  • Swimmers who are not toilet trained or experience incontinence must wear a reusable or disposable swim diaper, with a swimsuit or cover.
  • Diaper changing in the pool area is prohibited. Please use locker rooms.

The lifeguard has the authority to stop any unsafe behavior, enforce all rules, swim test any swimmer and ask those not in compliance with the policies to leave the pool area.  All swimmers are expected to follow the directions of the lifeguard.
